Simple and tasty rice rolls for the whole family!
I'm sharing with you four different variations of these popular Hmong sticky rice rolls with things I had on hand. The best part of these rolls is you can customize them with whatever protein and veggies you like! Add crab meat and edamame with rice seasoning for a sushi inspired roll. Make a hotdog fried rice roll by adding diced hot dogs, green onion, and a splash of soy sauce for a yummy kid-friendly snack - the options are endless.
These delicious sticky rice rolls make a great snack for kids and can be made ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator for up to three days. Pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds to heat and eat!
Sticky Rice Rolls
After discovering how easy it is to make sweet rice aka sticky rice in my electric rice cooker (see recipe), I have been testing a few different sticky rice roll recipes to share. These tasty Hmong rolls consist of mostly rice, a little bit of meat and a sprinkle of herbs to enhance the flavors. Not only are they easy to make, they can be customized to feed even the pickiest eaters. They make a great snack for families on-the-go, kid’s lunches and long road trips. Here are four variations to try:
Sausage (I used Lao sausage but any will do)
Bacon
Laab (I did chicken laab), see my Laab recipe here
Breakfast roll with eggs, sautéed sausage meat, onion and spinach
Ingredients
6 cups of cooked sweet rice 2 cups of cooked meat (chopped in smaller pieces) Sandwich wrap or saran wrap
Optional: green onion, cilantro, fried garlic/onion, salt & black pepper, Thai chili pepper, or whatever you want – be creative!
*Makes about 8 individual rolls
Directions
1. Combine rice, meat and any additional herbs/toppings of your choice into a large bowl
2. Mix well making sure to spread ingredients evenly
Scoop individual portions into sandwich bags or saran wrap
3. Distribute the contents evenly, wrap and roll
Pro Tip:the ingredients stick together better when both rice and meat are hot
I love this idea. We have an oriental store in town. I am now inspired to make rolls with jackfruit, veggies and savory spices.
